Los Angeles Home Stager - Altadena Spanish Cottage Staged Inexpensively

Add one Los Angeles home stager plus a fantastic 1928 Altadena Spanish Colonial Revival in (with an entry courtyard), the homeowners furniture, plus a few rented pieces of furniture, a Persian rug and some staging accessories et voila!

An interesting note about this lovely cottage: It was built and designed by Anna P Latham, one of the first women to be licensed as a building contractor in California. In 1928!

Here are some before and after pictures after staging. We brought in a new sofa, chair, rug, some artwork and accessories. We moved the existing furniture around to use it to best advantage. This was an inexpensive yet effective staging.

The coral color was a choice the homeowner made before we were hired to stage. While I am a big fan of using color to accentuate architectural features, this was not the right color.

Note the valuted ceiling. BTW, the chandelier is lit by candlelight and is raised and lowered with a pulley system.

Really nice job! Staging effects always fascinate me...it is like a magic trick or something. Interesting info about A.P. Latham. (I used to live in Glendale and still have friends in Altadena...some truly lovely homes).

Posted by Mara Hawks, Inactive-2012 REALTORĀ®, Homes for Sale Auburn Real Estate, AL (First Realty Auburn ) about 3 years ago

Thanks Mara. Sometimes I do feel a little like a magician. Altadena is a great area in Los Angeles County and there are so many architecturally and historically interesting homes like this one. Boy, Glendale to Auburn, AL...thats a big switch!

Very nicely staged, Michelle!  I love this style of home and Anna's design.  That chandelier with candlelight is so cool!

Thank you Maureen. I love Spanish Revival homes too (I live in one:o)) and I'm impressed this one was built by a woman contractor in the 1920's.

Hi Michelle - Very nice, and an excellent illustration of why staging is so important.  It's that first impression thing.  Warm and inviting vs. cold and abandoned.

Posted by Susan Neal, Fair Oaks CA Real Estate Broker, CA DRE#686562 (Century 21 Noel David Realty) about 3 years ago

Staging does make such a difference.  The living room went from looking woefully makeshift to homey and inviting.  Congratulations on a job well done.

Posted by Geri Sonkin - Long Island Real Estate (Prudential Douglas Elliman) about 3 years ago

Susan: So true. When I first walked in I thought "yikes". The house has such good bones, but I was distracted by the disjointed furniture and the layout. A clear cut case of staging by an amateur not cutting it. Now it feels like a home. Thanks!

Geri: Thank you. My goal was to make it more inviting. I'm glad I succeeded.

What a beautiful home and a fabulous Staging job. : ) What a cool feature to have the chandelier raise & lower by pulley.

Hi Michelle...Those few items in the kitchen changed it from plain and dull to colorful and warm.  Certainly agree with you about the living room fireplace even though I love coral.

Hi Michelle,

Great job, loved the before and after photos. BTW, I lived in a 1920's Spanish style home myself in Whittier. It was my very favorite place ever!

Michelle, I agree the fireplace needed to be painted. It's such a charming home and not that you created your magic I'm sure it will sell in no time.

It looks wonderful Michelle! Love the rug too :) But then again, you always do a wonderful job! Hope it sells quick!!

Posted by Wendy Timmons - Temecula Realtor (Allison James Estates & Homes) about 3 years ago

Thank you Cathy Lee!

Annie: I love the idea that the chandelier raises and lowers so you can light candles. Practically though I would probably electrify it if I lived there. It is a very cool house. Thanks.

Kate: The listing agent was concerned about the kitchen. Now she is very happy with it.

Lynda: Aren't those 1920's California Spanish Revival cottages the best? Love them...

Wanda: Its already been on the market for almost 3 months. Staging should do the trick.

Kathy: We didn't add much, but it was just enough to add gobs of appeal to this wonderful home. Thanks for the feature.

Luci: Everyone agreed the fireplace needed to be painted. There were also a few other details in the room that were painted the same color. It was very distracting.

Thanks, Wendy. My fingers are crossed that it will sell now that it is staged. It certainly looks much better. The new photos say "This house is worth a second look".

Michelle ~ Beautiful home! You really enhanced the features in this house! Glad to see the fireplace was painted.  Interesting chandelier as well.

Posted by Kathy Passarette, L.I. Staging/Decorating (Creative Home Expressions) about 3 years ago

Thank you Kathy P. It wasn't a particularly tricky job, just a very low budget. The house had good bones. It just needed to be fleshed out.

Posted by Michelle Minch Home Staging Los Angeles & Pasadena, CA (Moving Mountains Design Home Staging, Pasadena, CA) about 3 years ago

You should of said- add one FABULOUS stager........... Is this the house you had to do a lot of packing/ decluttering?

Posted by Wendy Timmons - Temecula Realtor (Allison James Estates & Homes) about 3 years ago

Michelle - Great job & beautiful home.  I used to live a couple of blocks from the Altadena Counrty Club.   Eclectic neighborhood!  Love the chandelier idea!

Wendy: You are my one woman cheerleading squad:o)) No, this is another home in Altadena. Last week was a big week for me and Altadena. I have yet to post the photos from the other job.

Patti: I love this neighborhood. This is a very nice street with well kept homes, most of them from the 20's. Also a lot of mature trees.

Thanks, Julea. Did you used to live in California?

What a GREAT property!  Beautifully staged as well......of course!

Michelle:  I can't believe you painted the firepalce..... just kidding.  What a difference a little paint and nice furnishings can do to a space.  I am sure this will not be on the market very long.

Have a great day from the Pacific Northwest.

Hi Lisa! Thanks. I have been busy lately, thankfully.

Thank you Lisa. Amazing what a few well placed pieces of furniture can accomplish, eh?

Todd: When I first started to read your comment I thought "Oh, no, here we go", but then I read on. Thank you!

Michelle-  Nice staging work in keeping with the period of the house!  And what a fantastic looking house too!  Don't you think all homes should be built by women?  They'd be so much more functional and better looking:)

You always stage so beautifully! Bravo on yet another job, so very well done!

Michelle, you did a fabulous job, as always.  If you had done nothing more than get them to paint the fireplace, you would have earned your weight in gold!  Good job.

Posted by Joanne O'Donnell (Chic Home Interiors - Stager, Trainer & EcoProfessional) about 3 years ago

Emma: This is, indeed, a lovely house and you can feel the touch of a woman in the design - both visually and functionally. Thanks.

Thank you Holly. Glad you approve.

Joanne: I agree, the coral paint had to go. It was the first thing you saw when you walked into the room, and not in a good way. Hmm, weight in gold...I'd be rich!

Michelle - What a fantastic job! I love seeing your before and afters. Your staging always works wonders! And how great to hear this home was designed and built by a woman back in the 20's. I'll be sharing that tidbit with my daughters!

I love the Mediterranean house in CA, they have so much character, but that orange fireplace was distracting, looks 100% better.
